Plant-Based Compostable Toothbrush Taking A Bite Out Of Dental Product Waste
World Centric Launches First Of Its Kind Toothbrush
In The U.S.

Every year in the United States some 450 million plastic toothbrushes make their way to landfills nationally. The majority of those toothbrushes will never biodegrade and will remain for decades. To reduce those staggering numbers, a company known for creating a long line of compostable products made from plants not petroleum, is launching the first compostable toothbrush in the United States.

World Centric has unveiled a line of compostable toothbrushes and travel cases that are made from a plant based resin called Ingeo™.  The toothbrush and case are certified compostable by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI).  They are also more environmentally friendly, having a smaller carbon footprint because Ingeo takes less energy to produce than petroleum based plastic resins.

The World Centric toothbrush is designed to fully compost within 3 to 6 six months when sent to a commercial composting facility. Simply throwing the World Centric toothbrush and case away and off to the landfill will not allow it to biodegrade. Landfills are created to avoid degradation and will not break down the toothbrushes. So, for those customers who don’t have access to a commercial composting facility in their area, World Centric will even provide a prepaid envelope that customers can use return the toothbrush and case. World Centric will then send the returned product to a composting facility for biodegradation.

The soft bristles of the toothbrush are made of nylon but are not compostable – the industry is still working to come up with bristles that are fully compostable. A handy notch between the head and the handle of the toothbrush is designed to make it easy to break off the head prior to
sending it to the composting facility. The 7-inch World Centric toothbrush and case comes in blue, green and orange and sells for $4.55. They are available at natural grocery stores, some Whole Foods stores nationwide and online at: www.worldcentric.org

People & Planet Green Business Award
Deadline for Nominations:  July 9

The green business you nominate may win a $5,000 prize!  Green America is proud to launch their new People & Planet Awards, rewarding green businesses nationwide for their contributions to a just and sustainable economy.  They have designed their first batch of awards to honor green businesses that are taking extraordinary steps to support local community action… and they need your help.  Between now and July 9, 2012, they are collecting nominations.

Tell them why your favorite local, green business should win.  You may nominate any green business you wish, but your nomination must tell us both how your choice is a sustainability leader and how your choice is helping your local community thrive.  You could nominate a Fair Trade store that also provides meeting space for local activists.  You could nominate a local clean-energy installer that provides employment opportunities for at-risk youth.  You could nominate a green restaurant or hotel that donates its cooking oil for biodiesel, or its organic waste for compost.  Use your imagination there are many possibilities!  Click here to make your nomination.

They are firm in their belief that a truly green business is good for both people and the planet. Winners of this award should reflect that principle, so please be as descriptive as possible in explaining why your nomination should win. [Click here for rules about eligibility]

From the nominations, the panel of green-business experts will select 10 finalists.  Green America will share the stories of the finalists, and conduct a run-off vote for three winners who will each receive a prize of $5,000. Winners will be announced at the end of the summer.

Green America’s People & Planet Awards are sponsored by Green America, a non-profit corporation with offices at 1612 K Street NW, Suite 600, Washington, DC 20006.

Ways to Green Your Backyard Barbeque
From sierraclub.org

1. Choose a cleaner-burning propane or electric grill over one powered by charcoal.

2. If you do use charcoal, look for lump brands (briquettes may contain coal dust or other additives as binders) made from invasive tree species or harvested from sustainably managed forests. Switch from lighter fluid, which releases smog-forming VOCs, to a chimney starter.

3. Buy sustainable fish and hormone-free meat for the grill.

4. Set your picnic table with reusable dishware and silverware and cloth napkins. If that's not feasible, look for biodegradable or recycled-paper dinnerware, unbleached cups, and recycled-paper napkins.

5. Clean up with a natural or homemade cleaner.

6. Fight off insect invaders without chemicals. Bug sprays containing DEET are bad for your health and the earth. Opt instead for a natural repellent like lemon eucalyptus.

For the Sweet Taste of Sugar Without the Calories!

Three refreshing new summer flavors of SweetLeaf® Liquid Stevia Sweet Drops™ are hitting the store shelves this month.

Wisdom Natural Brands®, the parent company of SweetLeaf Stevia® Sweetener, will offer three refreshing new summer flavors as part of their zero-calorie, zero-carbohydrate SweetLeaf® Liquid Stevia product line. Coconut, Watermelon and Cola are the new additions to the SweetLeaf Liquid Stevia Sweet Drops family, bringing the total number of available flavors to 17.

The three new flavors will also sport updated dropper bottle packaging that makes the natural sweetener easier to find on store shelves. The new flavors will be available in conventional and natural grocery stores nationwide. SweetLeaf Sweet Drops will also be offered online at www.buywisdom.com.

Made with USDA-certified organic stevia leaf extract and natural flavors, SweetLeaf Liquid Stevia Sweet Drops can be added to foods or beverages—from yogurt to oatmeal, water to coffee, sauces to smoothies—for sweet, sugar-free flavor.

Adding Cola to sparkling water creates a healthier soda, for instance, while a few drops of Watermelon in yogurt gives a fruit twist to a favorite, and the new Coconut flavor perks up coffee, tea and most everything else. Once only available as a dietary supplement, SweetLeaf Sweet Drops now qualifies for being classified as a tabletop sweetener!

All 17 flavors of Sweet Drops come in easy-to-use dropper bottles, so consumers can add as much or as little as their taste buds desire. With an average of 288 servings (except Cola flavor) per 2 fl. oz. bottle, Sweet Drops also offer great value in addition to a delicious sweet taste.

Along with the three new flavors, Sweet Drops are available in Lemon Drop, Valencia Orange, Berry, Chocolate Raspberry, English Toffee, Vanilla Crème, Hazelnut, Peppermint, Root Beer, Grape, Apricot Nectar, Chocolate, Cinnamon, and SteviaClear® for the sweet taste of sugar without the calories.

Remyxx Sneakers Combines Comfort, Fashion
and an Eco-Friendly Style

The World’s Only Landfill-Free Sneakers

Remyxx Sneakers are set to become the first 100 percent recyclable shoes in the world. They have currently reached their funding goal through the popular crowd funding website Kickstarter.

The mission of Remyxx is to deliver an enjoyable sustainable sneaker and initiate improvements in recycling. The recycling symbol appears on each shoe and is a great reminder that each shoe can be “remyxx-ed” to make new products.

“I not only wanted to create a shoe that can be recycled, but I wanted to create a shoe that people would want to wear,” said Creator Gary Gagnon. “These shoes are casual, comfortable and eco-friendly.”

You may remember Gagnon and Remyxx from his appearance on ABC’s Shark Tank. Since then, he has appeared on HLN with Jane Velez Mitchell and even mentioned in Perez Hilton’s blog “Fit Perez.” He has also been covered by the Charlotte Observer, Trend Hunter, Sneaker Blog DeFy New York, among others.

Just this week, Gagnon who was looking to raise $39,697.00 from donations through Kickstarter raised more than $44,000 so he can purchase material, build inventory and create new designs. “I brought my sneakers to Kickstarter because I love the idea of letting the public get involved,” said Gagnon. “I want to share my dream to change the way we think about sneakers and green-living with the world.”

Digital marketing agency, Command Partners, partnered with Remyxx to help make the Kickstarter campaign a success. Command Partners has a strong track record of helping startups and was excited for the opportunity to work with Gagnon.

“Gary is passionate about the brand and he is going to do big things to disrupt the sneaker industry,” said Amish Shah, managing partner at Command Partners. “We’re psyched to be working with such a great product, company and team and look forward to a long term partnership.”

REMYXX cool sneakers 100% recyclable are the world’s first and only completely Landfill-Free Sneakers™. REMYXX are casual comfortable lifestyle sneakers, in strong colors with clever designs for mass appeal to all types, ages, and genders. They are manufactured using a unique mix of materials that look and feel like canvas and rubber but are made entirely from a special blend of lab certified recyclable materials. With the recycling symbol prominently displayed on the uppers and the bottom sole you can tell the world that you choose to walk the green-way supporting eco-friendly behaviors for a sustainable future. It also tells the collection agencies and recycling processors what they can do with REMYXX in their second-life. Ultimately, at the end of their lifecycle, all parts of REMYXX, can be “remyxx-ed” to make new products and materials, including a new pair of REMYXX.

With funding in place, watch for great things to come from Remyxx.  REMYXXsneakers.com
