Bird Rock Coffee Roasters Launches New Biodegradable Coffee Bags as Part of “Clear and Green” Campaign

In celebration of Earth Day, specialty coffee retailer, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, announced its participation in the first ever “Clear and Green” campaign, aimed at providing transparency about where products originate and how they are produced. The campaign, hosted by ProductBio, is working with local businesses in La Jolla to help educate them on eco-friendly practices and green initiatives.

In addition to ongoing sustainability practices, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters earlier this month launched its new biodegradable coffee bag. The bags were engineered to biodegrade once they come in contact with microbes found in soil and water, including those found in backyard composts and landfills. And important to Bird Rock’s location, the bags will degrade in both salt and fresh water. Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is the only coffee vendor in San Diego utilizing these bags, and they expect to distribute more than 20,000 this year.

“We had wanted to shift to a sealed bag, but every other sealable bag on the market does not biodegrade and is rarely even compostable,” said Chuck Patton, owner of Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. “This was the only solution for us that will help us maintain the coffee’s freshness and vibrancy and align with our environmentally responsible ethos.”

Bird Rock Coffee Roasters partnership with ProductBio further amplifies its influence on a local level as it continues to demonstrate global influence and leadership in direct trade practices, a step beyond fair trade especially in regards to increased economic benefit to farmers. Bird Rock Coffee Roasters focuses its sustainability efforts in several areas, including: cultivation, roasting, packaging, usage, and disposal.

Bird Rock Coffee Roasters cultivation practices are comprised of direct trade sourcing with farmers from all over the world, and investing in those farms to help develop and cultivate sustainable farming practices.

  • The coffee beans are roasted using only energy efficient roasters and afterburners.

  • Coffee packaging is sustainable, biodegradable, and recyclable.

  • Bird Rock Coffee Roasters’ cafe maintains efficient water usage, provides only sustainable paper products, supports its local community and sponsors global non-profits in the coffee growing communities.

  • Ensures all disposable products, from cups to waste, are recycled appropriately.

“Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has a responsibility to set a strong example to our neighboring business community about conducting sustainable practices,” said Chuck Patton, owner of Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. “We care about our community and want our customers to know where their coffee is coming from. We’re proud to work with ProductBio to share our experience to help encourage other businesses in the area to do the same.” For more information, please visit

Truett-Hurst, Inc. Announces Supply Agreement with Ecologic Brands for PaperBoy Wine Bottles

Truett-Hurst, Inc., a recognized leader of innovative super-premium, ultra-premium and luxury wine, today announced earlier this month that it completed a general supply agreement with Ecologic Brands, Inc. ("Ecologic") to produce paper bottles for the groundbreaking PaperBoy brand. Ecologic Brands has been recognized for making America's first recycled paper bottles offering consumers a choice in packaging beyond plastic or glass.

Building upon its growth strategy, Truett-Hurst's three-year supply agreement (with a potential two year extension) with Ecologic demonstrates the progress the company has made in developing its downstream manufacturing supply channels over the past year. Ecologic's 60,000 square foot facility in Manteca, California will enable the company to meet the increased demand for PaperBoy wine while providing greater management and transportation efficiencies. PaperBoy recyclable wine bottles are made from compressed recycled cardboard formed into the shape of a standard Bordeaux wine bottle, are 85% lighter than traditional glass bottles and filled with appellation--based, super-premium wines sourced from the Mendocino and Paso Robles growing regions. PaperBoy is available in 45 states and has two offerings: a 2012 Paso Robles Red Blend (MSRP $14.99) and a 2012 Mendocino Chardonnay (MSRP $14.99).

Phillip L. Hurst, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Truett-Hurst, Inc., commented, "We are enthusiastic about the early sales and consumer pull for our PaperBoy brand. We have also been impressed with Ecologic's manufacturing approach and this agreement illustrates our confidence in their product and commitment to producing packaging produced locally. We believe this is an important step in solidifying the future for PaperBoy wine and we're excited to get this deal done with Ecologic."

Ecologic Brands CEO and Founder Julie Corbett commented, "We are excited about partnering with Truett-Hurst in growing the wine category through innovation. This is an important milestone that will drive Ecologic's mission of creating jobs and building a sustainable future with eco-friendly packaging designed and manufactured in California."
